  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Tivoli Theatre in Sydney was part of the Tivoli Circuit, originally established in 1893, which toured vaudeville and variety shows throughout Australia and New Zealand. After many changes in ownership and management, David N. Martin became chairman and managing director of the Circuit and its subsidiary companies in 1944. Under his direction, an increasing number of international acts were brought to Australia, usually after being selected by Martin during his frequent overseas trips. After his death in 1958, Neil Maver, Gordon Cooper and Martin’s son (David) Lloyd Martin took over management, although declining audience numbers saw the last Sydney production closing in 1966. The theatre was eventually demolished in 1969.
