Milo Dunphy (1929-1996) architect, conservationist, bushwalker, environmentalist, is the son of architect and conservationist Myles Joseph Dunphy (1891-1985).

Milo graduated with honors in architecture from the Sydney Technical College in 1953. In 1957 he established a practice with Bruce Loder. He was a partner in Loder and Dunphy and Dunphy Bell and Partners Architects and Planners for over 25 years. Milo was a sometimes controversial architect whose designs included unique churches which can be found around New South Wales.

From 1967-1969 he was State Councilor and Honorary Secretary of the National Parks Association of NSW. In 1971, he was elected Councilor of the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) and in 1974 as Vice President. He was also foundation member of the Myall Lakes Committee and co-founder of the Botany Bay Committee, the Murramerang Committee, Colong Committee and the Canopy Committee

In 1972, Milo gave up his architectural practice to become the full-time director of the new Total Environment Centre (TEC) until 1995. During his time as Director, he was involved in environmental campaigns and issues. This includes Colong Caves mining leases, Boyd Plateau pine plantations, Bugonia limestone mining, Myall Lakes beach mining, Clutha development, Natural gas pipeline across the Blue Mountains, Lake Pedder, Tanger Uranium, Botany Bay development, Border Ranges rainforest logging, Terania Creek rainforest logging, Eden woodchip, Southerns extensions to Blue Mountains National Park, Wollemi National Park, Macquarie Marshes drainage.

His interest was with natural areas also extened to a concern for the quality of life in urban Australia, urban design, pollution and transport issues. In 1972, he was appointed to the National State Inquiry by the Whitlam Government 1973-1974, which led to the establishment of the Australian Heritage Commission in 1975. He was Councilor, NSW Chapter of Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) from 1962-74, and Chairman of the Environment Committee Board for 8 years.

Milo's involvement in politics included lobbying and campaigning Coalition and Labor governments at state and national levels on environmental protection and environmental management, and wrote submissions to public inquiries, press releases and media appearances. He stood as a candidate for federal or state parliament on at least four occasions. In 1972, he worked for United Tasmania Group, the world's first green political party, as joint director of the election campaign to save Lake Pedder.

Honours included Member of the Order of Australia for services to conservation in 1986, the Sidney Luker Memorial Medal for services to planning by the NSW Division of the Royal Australian Planning Institute in 1988, the Global Five Hundred Award by the United Nations Environment Program in 1989, and honorary doctorate in science by the University of New South Wales for services to conservation in 1996.
