The N.S.W. Branch was founded in 1939, a year after the establishment of the Contemporary Art Society in Melbourne. A Federal Council was formed in 1961. The Branch promoted the unfettered creative and progressive expression of the visual arts. This was achieved through a program of exhibitions, lectures and talks, and through its publication, Broadsheet, edited by Elwynn Lynn from 1955 to 1970. Three annual exhibitions were held: the Autumn, the Interstate, and from 1962 the Young Contemporaries. The Branch arranged its members' representation in overseas exhibitions and assisted in bringing travelling exhibitions from abroad. It organised several art prizes during the 1960s, chief among these being the eponymous one donated by Sydney businessman, Roy H. Taffs. In 1966 Taffs was also instrumental in the Society being invited to send an exhibition to the Los Angeles Trade Fair.
