    James Rollo Fry (known by his family as Rollo and, later, Bill) was born in 1911, the sixth child of Arthur and Carrie Fry. He was educated at North Sydney Boys' High School. He was active in the scout movement, joining as a boy in 1922; he was a member of the Australian contingent to the 4th World Scout Jamboree in Hungary in 1933, and a Scoutmaster, 1935-1940. He qualified as an accountant in the early 1930s and was a member of the staff of Flack & Flack, Chartered Accountants at the time of his enlistment with the RAAF in April 1942. He married Jean Palmer Blake in 1941; their daughter Glenn was born in 1942. In August 1942 he left for Canada where he gained his navigator's wing and commission, then went on to England. He commenced operations with an RAAF Lancaster Squadron in March 1944; on the 13 June 1944, returning from a bombing raid in Germany, Bill Fry and all the crew were killed when their aircraft was shot down over Holland.
