Dugald Macdonald Sinclair was born in Scotland in 1841. After completing his education in France and Germany he commenced work as a merchant seaman. In 1859 he joined the mail ship 'Prince Alfred' as a supernumery and sailed to Australia. In the ensuing years he travelled and worked throughout Queensland. His reminiscenses of the time record the early development of Rockhampton and Gladstone, and provide an account of his adventures as a member of William Landsborough's expedition in North Queensland (probably in 1860). After leaving Australia Sinclair travelled to New Zealand where, as a member of the 12th Regiment, he fought in the Maori Wars. After his military service Sinclair returned home to Scotland. Soon afterwards he set out for Canada via New York, sailing aboard the emigrant ship 'James Foster'. Sinclair arrived in Canada in 1870 and journeyed down the Red River to Fort Garry and Winnipeg. He travelled and worked extensively throughout the region, eventually settling in Winnipeg where he became the proprietor of the Queens Hotel. - System of arrangementChronological
