HMS Brisk was a screw corvette which operated from the Australian Station between 1864 and 1868. She departed from Sydney on 26 Sept. 1867 on a voyage to Fiji. - Scope and ContentThe letter was written while HMS Brisk was returning to Sydney from Fiji. The writer describes the earlier departure from Sydney, gives geographical details of Fiji (a sketch map is included), and describes Fijian life and society, both European and indigenous. He discusses the work of the Wesleyan missionaries and describes a meeting with Chief Thakembau and his wife. He also mentions the possibility of a punitive expedition against cannibal tribes.
