  • General note

    It seems, given the provenance of the lithographs, that the inscriptions on the reverse of the cartoons are contemporary and are by Richard Windeyer. 3 of the inscriptions are initialled "RW" (PXE 743/2,3 & 4), and in one of these the writer refers to dining with William Charles Wentworth a few days day after the publication of the cartoon (PXE 743/4).
    The late nineteenth century - early twentieth century mounts on the lithographs are inscribed with copies of the contemporary notes on their reverse. These later inscriptions mistakenly identify E.C. Merewether as F.L.S. Merewether.
