  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Clare Grant Stevenson (1903-1988) was Director of the Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force from 1941 to 1946, becoming the first woman to be appointed as a commissioned officer in any armed service in Australia. She was appointed with the rank of Squadron Officer, then promoted to Wing Officer in October 1941 and to Group Officer in April 1942. Before the war she had been an executive with Berlei (Aust.) Ltd and spent from 1935 to 1939 in London to develop Berlei (U.K.) Ltd. Joyce A. Thomson is a freelance researcher, former WAAAF and author of The WAAAF in Wartime Australia, published by Melbourne University Press in 1991.
