    James Goodenough (1830-1875) joined the Royal Navy in 1844 as a midshipman. He served in the Chinese wars, 1857-58 and 1860-61 and saw much other foreign service. In 1873 he was appointed commodore of the Australian station but died two years later after being wounded by a poisoned arrow on the island of Santa Cruz.
