  • General note

    The original drawing for this engraving can be attributed to Wallis by the inscription on the reverse of another print of the same engraving at PXD 373/19
    This plate was not used in the 1821 London edition, "Historical account of the colony of New South Wales", but another copy was bound into a set of Wallis's prints (once owned by Alfred Lee) which is now at F981.W cop. 5, Mitchell Library. Another copy of an earlier state before letters is at PXD 373/19
    This engraving pre-dates the large plate of Newcastle (see PXD 373/6) which was used in the London "Historical account of the colony of New South Wales". This engraving does not show the watch-house (?) at the left of the public wharf - the building appears in the later plate
