The original drawing was offered for sale as part of the journal compiled by Pierre-Bernard Milius on the expedition led by Nicolas Baudin, 1800-1804, with an additional volume of drawings, at Sotheby's, London, 4 Nov. 1963, lot 285. They were then acquired by Mr Peter Shand-Kydd and a microfilm obtained for the Mitchell Library, ref. FM4/2233. On 26 Oct. 1988 the items were sold at Christie's, London, lot 80. On 30 Nov. 1992, the journal and all but three of the drawings were sold at Christie's, Melbourne, lot 284. The portrait of Bata was one of those excluded from the sale and was sold separately in Feb. 1996 to a private collector through a Sydney art dealer.
