George Thomas Smith ("Banjo Bill") was born on 25 July 1915 in Milparinka, N.S.W., one of twelve children in his family. He received his early schooling in Milparinka and went to high school in Broken Hill. He died on 30 April 1982.

"A hundred years of corner life" describes life in the Milparinka-Tibooburra district in the north-west corner of New South Wales, in the period ca. 1880-1930. Smith has based his manuscript on information from newspapers published towards the end of the 19th century in Milparinka, Tibooburra, White Cliffs, Wilcannia, Silverton and Broken Hill. The manuscript consists of 18 chapters, a map and various indexes.
