E.T.H. Hutton was born at Torquay, Devon in 1848. He joined the British army in 1867 as an ensign. He served in the Zulu Wars (1879), the occupation of Egypt (1882) and the Nile Expedition (1884-85). By 1889 he had achieved the rank of lieutenant-colonel. In 1893 he became commandant of the NSW military forces with the rank of major-general. His reorganisation of the NSW forces resulted in an army capable of taking the field as part of a federal force. He returned to England in 1896. In 1898 he went to Canada to command the Canadian militia. In 1901 he was appointed by the Australian government to command and organise its land forces. He returned to England in 1904 and was promoted lieutenant-general in 1907. He was appointed K.C.B. in 1912 and died in 1923. - Scope and ContentA revised and enlarged version of the author's paper on the same subject in The Australian Quarterly, Dec. 1956.
