    James Oliphant Clunie was born in Scotland in 1795. He joined the 17th Regiment as an ensign in 1813 and was promoted to lieutenant the following year. He sailed for NSW in 1820 as guard commander on the convict transport Prince of Orange. In 1821 he was transferred to Madras, India on the Almorah. In 1826 he was promoted to captain. In 1830 he returned to NSW as senior officer of the Guard on the convict transport Forth. From 1830 to 1836 he held the position of commandant at Moreton Bay. On returning to Sydney he acted as a magistrate for a time and later served in India. In 1843 he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel and a year later was appointed C.B. He died in 1851.
