    Richard Leonard Norman (1850-1917), was Arthur Leonard Norman’s grandfather. Richard left England 24th September 1870 on sailing ship Zealandia for New Zealand, arriving in Lyttleton on 24th December 1870, the furthest trip ever for a sailing vessel up to that time. He left Lyttleton 3rd July 1871 on the steamship Allambra, called at Wellington, Greymoth in New Zealand and arrived in Melbourne 29th July 1871. On 31 July 1871 he entered Sydney Heads in S.S. Hero.

    Richard Leonard Norman's diary of a ‘Journey from Derby, England to New Zealand in Ship Zealandia’, 20 September 1870-18 May 1872, describes the weather, ocean conditions, ships seen, his health and passengers on board, with poems and newscutting ‘The Catalan Forge’.

    Biographical notes relating to Richard Leonard Norman (1850-1917), by his grandson Arthur Leonard Norman, with annotated photocopies and typed transcripts of sections of Richard’s diary, and a typed transcript of letter from Nagasaki, Japan by Arthur Norman to his older brother Richard Leonard in Australia, 1 May 1876.

    Typed proofs of unpublished poems by Brian Robson attached to covering autograph letter signed from Arthur Leonard Norman to the Mitchell Library, December 1968-16 September 1989, relating to a dispute over the inclusion of an illustration by Norman Lindsay. Also includes autograph letter signed from Brian Dobson to his publisher Walter Stone, 25 September 1963, relating to a suggestion for the title page.
