David Stead, naturalist, was born 6 March 1887 at North Sydney. He was the founder of Australian deep-sea fisheries in the eastern states; held many government positions, including Naturalist to the Board of Fisheries NSW, 1902-1910, and General Manager of the State Trawling Industry, 1915-1920; and was the Australian representative on several International Committees on Fisheries, Marine Biology and Oceanography. He was a founding member of The Wild Life Preservation Society of Australia and a member and office bearer of many scientific and natural history societies. He was a prolific writer of scientific papers, reports and books, and of popular natural history articles for journals and newspapers. Stead died in 1957 and is commemorated by the David Stead Wildlife Research Foundation. - General note
