  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Frederick George Godfrey Rose (22 March 1915 - 14 January 1991) was a British-born anthropologist and communist, who studied at Cambridge before going to Australia in 1937 to research on Aboriginal culture, with a particular focus on Darwin and Groote Eylandt. Suspected of being a spy working for the Soviets during the Menzies years, the fallout of the 1954 Petrov Affair led to his emigrating to the German Democratic Republic, and to his appointment as professor of social anthropology at the Humboldt University of Berlin. He came back to Australia to continue his research at Angas Downs in the 1960s, and would keep on coming back and forth during the rest of his life. He published many books in English and in German, and left some unpublished works which he had started during his retirement years.

  • System of arrangement
This collection was arranged with a double purpose: respecting its creator's original order as much as it could be discerned, while making it easy to navigate through for any reader. This led to a division in series, the first of which, General Correspondence, had already been entirely arranged by Frederick Rose himself during his life. Series 2, 3 and 4 were arranged thematically, each attempting to follow a chronological order. Finally, series 5 and 6 were adapted to encompass two specific formats, audio recordings and photography.
