  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Margel Hinder (nee Harris) was born in New York in 1906 and grew up in Buffalo. In 1926 she moved to Boston where she studied sculpture. She married Australian artist Frank Hinder in 1930 and came to Australia with him and their daughter Enid in 1934. In 1953 she shared third prize in the international Unknown Political Prisoner sculpture competition. Her most visible achievements are her large scale sculptures at Woden Town Centre in Canberra, Northpoint in North Sydney, the Reserve Bank in Sydney and the Captain Cook Memorial Fountain in Newcastle. She was an activist, particularly concerned with preservation of wildlife and the wilderness. In 1979 she was awarded an Order of Australia. She is represented in Commonwealth, State and regional galleries. She died in 1995.
