"Bully" Hayes was born in Ohio, USA and first appeared in Australia in 1857 when he arrived in Fremantle in command of the barque C.W. Bradley. During the next twenty years he earned a reputation as the most notorious scoundrel in the South Pacific. His adventurous career encompassed blackbirding, gun-running, swindling and bigamy. - Scope and Content31 May 1856; Certificate discharging Thomas Fordyce from the barque C.W. Bradley in Swatow, China signed by the master William Henry "Bully" Hayes. Also included is a letter from the donor, J.D. Fordyce, giving additional information.
