Shirley Shennen was born Shirley Wilson in Moree, NSW in 1923. She was educated at Moree Intermediate High School. During World War II she served in the WAAAF (Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force). She married Graham Barnes in 1949. The marriage ended in divorce in 1972 and she later married Frank Shennen. The bulk of her papers comprise letters she received from American, Australian and British servicemen during World War II. Also included are letters from friends in Moree and from a friend in the WAAAF.
