Robin Rhona Tranter was born in Sydney in 1934; her parents were the children's illustrator and author, Pixie O'Harris and Bruce W. Pratt, who edited the second and third editions of the Australian Encyclopaedia. Her aunt, Pat O'Harris, worked as an illustrator with Angus & Robertson and, using the pen name "Tricia Bradbury", with the NSW School Magazine.
