Bill Whittaker AM, born September 1948, awarded Membership of the Order of Australia in 1992 for services to community health through HIV / AIDS organizations. He was Executive Director of the AIDS Council of New South Wales (1986-1990); Vice President (1988-1990) then National President of the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (1990-1992); President of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras (1985-1986); a founding board member (1987) and later Chairperson of the Board (1993-1994) of the publishers of the Sydney Star Observer. Bill Whittaker spoke at many AIDS conferences from 1988 onwards and wrote articles for various publications. He was a major contributor to the Commonwealth Government’s National HIV/AIDS Strategy published in 1993, and to several other government task forces.
