  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In July 1825, Thomas Icely was given a free grant of 560 acres in Carcoar, N.S.W., by Lord Bathurst and named the land Cooming Park. By 1838, Icely had acquired almost 60,000 acres of land, and using 62 convicts, brought 240 acres under cultivation, established a horse stud, and completed the major farm buildings. In June 1863, members of Ben Hall’s gang robbed the station and shot a stable hand. Fearing for his safety, Icely left Cooming Park in 1862 and his son Thomas R. Icely took over the business. Cobb & Co, the stage coach company, purchased Cooming Park in 1881 and the management was entrusted to William Franklyn Whitney, one of the original partners in Cobb and Co. When he died in 1895, his widow, Mrs. Isobel Whitney, carried on the property and the stock with the aid of her son, Mr. A. W. Whitney, as manager, and her brother, Arthur Leeds, as general adviser. When Waugoola was formed in 1907, Coombing Park and some other properties were transferred to the family ownership of The Whitney Pastoral Co. Ltd. (later Pty. Ltd.) and Claverton was included. In 1927 Arthur Leeds retired as manager and Mr Arthur Leeds (Jnr.) succeeded his father as supervisor of the Whitney Pastoral Co. Pty. Ltd.'s holdings. His aunt, Mrs. I. (W. F.) Whitney, who died in 1942, had been responsible for the establishment, in 1910, of a stud of Shorthorn cattle that became renowned.
In 1944, Ewart King, a descendant of William Franklyn Whitney, took over the management of Cooming Park. About half the acreage was lost to soldier settlement blocks following the Second World War, and the King family used the proceeds to improve the remaining pastures and re-establish a renown Shorthorn cattle stud.
