  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Life Education Centres, now known as Life Education, was founded by Ted Noffs in 1979. In 1964 Noffs established a Methodist mission in Kings Cross, Sydney, which he named ‘The Wayside Chapel of the Cross’. After several years working in Kings Cross, his vision was to provide drug and health education programs to children and young people. In 1979, Noffs converted a room above the Wayside Chapel into a classroom. The drug and health education program included TAM, the Transparent Anatomical Manikin, a life sized model of the female body, and Harold, an animated giraffe. Noffs also began developing the concept of a mobile classroom. With the help of his friend Dick Smith the first mobile Life Education Centre was built in 1982.

In 1987 Noffs suffered a stroke that left him partly paralysed, and sometimes in a coma, until his death in 1995. His son Wesley Noffs became the CEO of Life Education Centres.

Life Education now operates in all Australian states and territories, as well as in New Zealand, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, the United States, Barbados, Cyprus, Finland, Hungary, Thailand, Ireland, Papua New Guinea and Macau.
