  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Barbara Vernon (1916-1978) lived in Inverell in New South Wales where she ran a local drama group for which she wrote plays. Her radio plays, mostly serials for children, were heard over the local radio station. She served in the WAAAF in World War Two. In 1959 she moved to Sydney and worked as a freelance writer before joining the Australian Broadcasting Corporation drama department. She devised the ABC television serial 'Bellbird' and wrote many of the early episodes, as well as two books based on the fictional country town. Her grandfather, John Barling came to New South Wales from England in the 1840s and settled down near Manilla on the Namoi river.
