  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Rupert (Bob) Northcote Boulton, MBE, Australian pioneer aviation mechanic, pilot and engineer, joined Australian National Airways in 1929 as one of the company's first four pilot engineer apprentices. When Australian National Airways ceased operations in 1931, Boulton retained employment with Charles Ulm working on the plane ‘Faith in Australia’, accompanying him on his pioneering airmail flights as engineer and assistant pilot. When Charles Ulm died in 1934, Boulton worked with the Kingsford Smith Air Service, Charles Kingsford-Smith and P. G. Taylor. Bob Boulton wrote ‘Aviators of the Charles Ulm and Kingsford Smith era’ published posthumously in 1993. For his pioneering flights with Ulm and his services to aviation, he was awarded the MBE in 1976. Bob Boulton died in 1982.
