  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    1. Hugh McCrae (1876-1958) was born in Melbourne but lived much of his life in Sydney. He was a close friend of Norman Lindsay until they drifted apart. He is best known for his poetry, letters and black & white illustrations, but also wrote prose, drama and journalism. In 1953 he was made OBE. 2. Norman Lindsay (1879-1969) was born at Creswick, Victoria. Primarily noted as an artist (painter, etcher, cartoonist, illustrator, sculptor and model-maker), he also wrote novels, essays, literary criticism and art appreciation. 3. Rose Lindsay (1885-1960) was born in Sydney as Rose Soady. She became an artist's model at an early age and modelled for many of Norman Lindsay's paintings. They were married in 1920. 4. Dame Mary Gilmore (1864-1962) was born Mary Cameron near Goulburn, NSW. She became a school teacher and developed a life long interest in the labour movement. She published a number of books of poetry and prose as well as contributing poems and articles to newspapers and journals. In 1937 she was appointed DBE for her achievements in the fields of literature and social reform. 5. George Rayner Hoff (1894-1937) was born on the Isle of Man, England. He achieved some success as a sculptor before taking up a teaching position at East Sydney Technical College in 1923. He became the outstanding public sculptor in Sydney between the wars.

    3. Letter dated 7 January 1947 from Rose Lindsay concerning her relationship with Norman Lindsay.
    4. Undated draft letter from McCrae to Dame Mary Gilmore concerning poetry and poets.
    5. Undated draft letter from McCrae to R.H. Croll (illustrated) in which he criticises Sir Arthur Streeton. There is an unrelated draft on the back.
