In 1998 the Sydney Institute of Technology Library deaccessioned some published and unpublished materials from its holdings. These records were sent to the Archives Authority of New South Wales, now the State Records Authority of New South Wales, for possible retention as State archives. The Archives Authority determined that these records fell outside the schedules devised for the archiving of TAFE records and, therefore, did not constitute State archives. As a result of this, and in accordance with the Archives Act 1960 which is now replaced by the State Records Act 1998, the Authority disposed of the records by returning them to the TAFE Historian, Norm Neill. The records were then offered to the State Library of NSW on appraisal for incorporation principally into its Manuscripts Collection. In 1999 the records were formally acquired by the State Library as a resource of historical value documenting the development of technical education in NSW.
