  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Lloyd Rees was born in Brisbane 1895. During a long life he was a painter, lecturer in art, acting Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, University of NSW and President of the NSW Society of Artists. He received an honorary D. Litt. from Sydney University in 1970. He was made CMG in 1978 and AC in 1985. He exhibited in London and America as well as Australia and was a multiple award winner. He died in 1988.
  • Scope and Content
1924-1941; Letters to Miss J. Sheldon of the Gainsborough Gallery, Brisbane. The letters written in 1924 refer to the July 1924 Exhibition of Rees' works at Exton House, Brisbane. The letter dated 4 September 1924 and signed 'L. Rees' is probably not by Lloyd Rees. This is the opinion of his son, Alan Rees, based on the handwriting and content.
1984; Letter to the editor of the Australian newspaper.
ca. 1982; Unpublished manuscript notes. Draft for Lloyd Rees' autobiography, Peaks and valleys. The first part is headed 'Tasmania' and the second part is headed 'Tasmanian Homes'.
1982-85; Handwritten notebook containing notes for Peaks and valleys, and also An artist remembers.
