  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Eve Nairn with the assistance of this collection of research notes compiled by Sondra Silverman, commenced her thesis on the Australia First Movement in the early 1960's, but never completed it. The Australia First Movement was an ultra-nationalistic wartime organisation formed in Sydney in 1941 whose aims supported the defence of Australia even at the expense of the overall war effort. The collection includes correspondence with Sondra Silverman, an American Fullbright scholar in law, who was based within the Department of Political Science at the Australian National University in the early 1960s. Silverman, according to a 1963 newscutting within the collection, "tried to dicredit the action of the Curtin Labour government in interning the leaders of the fascist Australia First Movement during the war".
