    Anne Fairhurst Summers, AO, BA(Hons), PhD was born on 12 March 1945, daughter of AHF and EF Cooper. She was educated at Cabra Convent, South Australia, and the University of Adelaide, and later at the Universities of Sydney and New South Wales. In Sydney she became active in the women's movement and began her writing career. Summers joined the National Times as a feature writer in 1975 and in 1976 won a Walkley Award for a series of articles on New South Wales Prisons. Since then she has held numerous positions: political correspondent, Australian Financial Review (1979-1984) - and during this time was also Canberra correspondent for the Far Eastern Economic Review and Australian corrrespondent for Le Monde); First Assistant Secretary to the Office of the Status of Women, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (1984-1986); United States Editor in New York, Australian Financial Review, and North American Manager John Fairfax Ltd (1986-1987); Editor-in Chief Ms Magazine and Co-owner Matilda Publications, Inc., (1987-1989); Editor-at-Large Ms Magazine (1989-1992); Political Consultant to Prime Minister Paul Keating (1992-1993); Editor, Good Weekend Magazine (1993- ). Summers was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1989 for services to the media and to women. Her publications include: Damned Whores and God's Police; The Colonization of Women in Australia (1975); Her Story. Australian Women in Print 1788-1975 (1980 - jointly with Margaret Bettison; Gamble for Power (1983).
