  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

After serving in the First World War, James Halpin Ward (ca.1894-1982) was granted a Settlement Purchase under the Returned Soldiers Settlement Act. From 1921 to 1931, Ward held a farm at "Eulabil" on Goolagong Road, Belubula in the Canowindra/Molong district of N.S.W.. However, drought conditions, plant diseases, loss of stock, hail, fire and instability of markets brought serious financial difficulties. The Department of Lands (Sydney) took out liens over his crops for several years, before permitting Ward to enter into a share-farming agreement with E. J. Jeffery in 1931. Ward then left the farm due to ill health and became Secretary to the Armidale and New England District Hospital.
