  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Vernon Arthur (Bim) Hilder (1909-1990) was born in Parramatta, first son of the artist Jesse Jewhurst Hilder (1881-1916). Bim was a sculptor, painter and printmaker. In 1934 Bim married Roma Hopkinson (ca. 1903-1983), commercial artist and printmaker, and the two lived and worked together at their home in Edinburgh Street, Castlecrag.

Bim trained as a carpenter under Walter Burley Griffin in Castlecrag, where he worked with Burley Griffin to design and build the 'Haven Scenic Theatre.' He designed and built a number of homes in Castlecrag, including his mother's house 'Wildflower', his own home at 177 Edinburgh Road, and 173 Edinburgh Road.

In 1963 Bim won the Reserve Bank of Australia wall enrichment competition and proceeded to fabricate his design. In 1965 he designed and built a copper memorial fountain in Castlecrag to Walter Burley Griffin. In 1978 Bim was awarded an M.B.E. for sculpture and service to the community. He also served as president of the Sculptors' Society.

Bim and Roma's son, Kimble (Kim) (b. 1947) is an artist and sculptor, and has also worked on films as an art director, in special effects, and with prop construction.
