Donald Murray was a close friend and confidant of Donald Friend. The two shared rooms in Edgecliff, Sydney in 1935 and 1936 until Friend's departure overseas. In 1947 Friend and Murray bought a cottage in Hill End, New South Wales and settled in. After several overseas sojourns and painting trips to Queensland and Melbourne Friend sold his share in the cottage in 1959.
