  • General note

This drawing records an attack on John Allen's property at Milton (on the west bank of the Cygnet River, east coast of Tasmania) on 14 December 1828. After a series of raids in the district by Aboriginal people, and counter raids by colonists, Milton Farm was attacked whilst Allen was alone. This drawing records his single-handed defence of his farm. The incident seems to have become a defining incident in his life, and was even noted on his tombstone. Family legend says that the drawing was sketched from memory, and was not immediately contemporary to the event (information from David Hansen ML 1043/98).
