  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Stanley Parkes, historian, writer and teacher began research on Australian Aborigines during World War II, ca. 1942-1945, when stationed in the Northern Territory (Adelaide River, Batchelor and Port Keats). His research includes correspondence with A. P. Elkin and local studies of Aboriginal language and culture. Parkes later taught in a mission school at Brungle, near Gundagai and Tumut N.S.W. ca. 1946-1947 and gathered information from local Wiradjuri people. His research focus, ca. 1970-ca. 1990, reflects the history of the Hunter Valley region in N.S.W. including the local indigenous peoples and particularly, the history of German immigration to that area, including extensive biographical, and genealogical documentation. The Local History room of Cessnock Public Library is named in honor of Stan Parkes.
