Frederick Neeld (1830-1916) discovered gold at Wyalong and opened the way to one of New South Wales' richest goldfields. He came to Australia from London in 1849 and settled in Melbourne, before joining the Victorian gold rush. In May 1893, his son George selected 1000 hectares of land in the Wyalong district of New South Wales. He was then joined by his brothers Joseph, Ernest and Harry, and his father Frederick. They soon discovered several reefs of gold on the field, and on 18 Dec. 1893 they made the first official report of their findings. In March 1894 the rush began with 10000 people coming to the region, and this led to the founding of the township of Wyalong. Magda Neeld, granddaughter of Frederick Neeld, was involved in the Wyalong Centenary Celebrations in 1994 along with other descendants.
