  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    In the late 1980s, at the height of the HIV crisis in Australia, NSW Users and AIDS Association (NUAA) helped establish Badlands, an emergency residential shelter in Surry Hills for HIV-positive drug users. Later known as Foley House, the centre was a vital harm minimisation initiative for positive intravenous drug users in inner Sydney.
  • Scope and Content
    Badlands Services Association ran a refuge in Surry Hills for intravenous drug users at risk of contracting Hepatitis and HIV/Aids. The centre was renamed Foley House Incorporated in 1996. As the records include the personal details of people who stayed at Badlands, including their drug use, psychiatric health and sexual matters, the records are restricted by concerns for the privacy of the former residents. The records are from the period 1990 to 1995.
