Nicholai Nicholaievich Mikluho-Maklai (1846-1888) was a Russian scientist, explorer and anthropologist who studied the people, environment and culture of New Guinea and Melanesia.
Maclay’s travels took him to Sydney where he established Australia’s first marine laboratory in Watsons Bay in 1882 and married Margaret Clark, the widowed daughter of former Premier, Sir John Robertson in 1884.
Maclay was a staunch supporter of protecting the people of Melanesia and Aboriginal Australians from mistreatment and exploitation.
He died in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1888.
