Ron Shand was born Ronald Ernest McMurtry in Sydney in 1906. The surname Shand was given to his grandparents by Fitzgerald's Circus. He was born into a family of entertainers, and was brought up in Melbourne by grandparents while his younger sister Iris travelled with their parents in a circus.
Ron Shand became an actor, comedian, dancer and entrepreneur. In the late 1940's he married Letty Craydon and they performed together in revues. He acquired vast experience as a popular entertainer in soft shoe, circus, vaudeville, revue, musical comedy and cabaret. He also acted on television, became a well known recording artist and acted roles in Shakespeare for the John Alden Company.
