Stephanie Dowrick, writer and psychotherapist, was born in New Zealand in 1947. She has worked in the publishing industry since 1972 and was co-founder and Managing Director of The Women's Press, London, from 1977 to 1982. She has been writing full time since 1983, when she also came to live in Australia. Running backwards over sand, her novel published in 1985, has been translated into Swedish and Dutch, while her best-selling, self-help book Intimacy and solitude, has been favourably reviewed around the world. In 1991 Stephanie Dowrick was appointed Chair of The Women's Press.
