  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

William Gardner (1802-1860) went to New England about 1842 and became a tutor at Saumarez station near Armidale. In 1844 he compiled the first detailed map of the northern districts of New South Wales. Gardner took a keen interest in history and geography and he compiled extensive notebooks of information about these areas.

This original volume was lent by J.S.N Brown to the State Library in March 1946. It was later returned to the owner (ML1948/744)
  • Scope and Content
Includes lists of settlers, information on sheep farming and cattle grazing, mainly in New England, statistics on the state of the colony in 1843 and 1844 and two maps. This volume is probably an early draft of a two volume work by Gardner with the same title, dated 1842-1854, located in the Mitchell Library manuscripts collection at A 176/1-2
