    Octavius Charles Beale (1850-1930), piano manufacturer, was born in Queen's County, Ireland, eighth son of Joseph Beale, a woollen manufacturer, and his wife Margaret, nee Davis. The family emigrated to Tasmania in 1854. Octavius returned to Ireland in 1859 to be educated. He joined his family in Melbourne in 1864 and began work for Brooks, Robinson & Co., being made a partner in 1870. He began his own business importing sewing machines and moved to Sydney in 1884 where he established Beale & Co., Ltd. The company expanded to include importation and later manufacture of pianos. He remained Managing Director until his death in a motor accident in 1930. Beale was survived by his second wife Kate, nee Baily, the sister of his first wife, Elizabeth, and ten children of his first marriage.

    Sir George Mason Allard (1866-1953), businessman, was born in London. He came to N.S.W. in 1888 to work for the Australian Joint Stock Bank and began work as a Public Accountant on his return from a honeymoon trip to England in 1895. He was appointed a Royal Commissioner by the N.S.W. and Commonwealth governments on a number of occasions, lectured in banking and business principles at the University of Sydney and was a founding director of Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia) Ltd. He was knighted in 1926 and held office in a number of business, social and charitable organisations.

    Photocopy of unpublished family history by Aldyth Jones, Keeping Your Word : the Letters of Four Australian Families, 1994. Deals with the Couves, Allard, Baily and Beale families and consists largely of transcriptions of Beale family correspondence. Correspondents include Prime Ministers Alfred Deakin and S.M. Bruce, N.S.W. Premiers, W.A. Holman and Sir Bertram Stevens, Cardinal Moran and Archbishop Vaughan, Lord Gowrie, Joseph Chamberlain and Guglielmo Marconi.
