    J. D. (Jack) Blake was born Alfred Airey in England in 1909. He arrived in Australia in 1922 and joined the Communist Party of Australia in 1925. From 1931 to 1933 he studied at the Lenin School, Moscow. He changed his name by deed poll at Melbourne in 1934, the same year he married CPA Victorian State Committee member, Audrey Elsie Boyd. Blake was Victorian State Secretary from 1933 to 1949. A Central Committee member from 1935, Blake was on the National Secretariat from 1951 to 1954. He held the first research appointment by the Socialist Research Fund, established to assist theoretical inquiry and research into problems of concern to all Socialists in Australia. In 1971 Blake published Revolution From Within - A Contemporary Theory of Social Change.
