  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Joy Lindrum Gillan is a writer and member of The Society of Women Writers (Australia). Lindrum Gillan was President of New South Wales Branch of the Society, 1984-1986, and Federal President of the Society, 1986-1988. The papers are Lindrum Gillan's records of the activities of, and her involvement in, the Society.
The Society of Women Writers was formed in Sydney in 1925. In 1970 it became The Society of Women Writers (Australia). After 1970 branches were established in a number of Australian states. A revised Constitution and Rules was adopted by the Society at the Inaugural Biennial Conference held in Sydney in 1978. In 1984 the Constitution was revised again to reflect the establishment of the Federal Council of the Society. The Federal Council organises the biennial conference, issues the official newsletter The Woman Writer, issues reports and balance sheets and administers various literary competitions and awards. In 1986 the New South Wales Branch incorporated to become The Society of Women Writers New South Wales Incorporated, effectively seceding from the federal body. The papers document aspects of the dispute between the Federal Council and the New South Wales Branch.
