Dr Jean Lennane was born in New Zealand, where she gained her medical degree and qualified as a physician. She then went to England to complete her training as a psychiatrist. In 1980 she was employed by the Central Sydney Area Health Service as Director of Drug and Alcohol Services at Rozelle Hospital. In 1990 she was dismissed after publicly criticising cuts to mental health and drug and alcohol services in the public health system. She went into private practice and became National President of Whistleblowers Australia.
