  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Lindley Evans (1895-1982) studied the piano with Frank Hutchens at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music when it opened in 1915. He later became Professor of Pianoforte at the Conservatorium and also Hutchen's musical partner in a two-piano team. Evans and Hutchens gave concerts together for 40 years. In 1922, Evans toured England, Scotland and Wales as accompanist and solo pianist to Dame Nellie Melba. He continued to be her accompanist until she died in 1931. In Dec. 1936 Evans travelled to the United States to investigate the writing of film music in Hollywood. Evans was 'Mr Melody Man' for the ABC Radio programme 'Children's Hour' for 31 years. He was awarded the OBE for his services to music in 1963.
