  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Harry Thyer, born 1872 in Wales, United Kingdom, died 1950 in Manly, Australia. Family sources recall that Harry worked for the Australian Labor Party and Union movement c. 1905, travelling throughout rural New South Wales recording the pay and conditions of rural workers, including those working with the new harvesting machines. This information may have been relevant to the Havester Judgement of 1907 by Justice Higgins but does not appear to be documented in this collection. Harry went on to become Vice-President of the Sydney Labor Council, 1908 and President of the Labor Council of New South Wales, 1909-1910. He later became Industrial Inspector, Department of Labour and Industry, 1911-1916, charged with "inspecting and carrying proceedings for breaches of the Acts and Awards, including the conduct of cases in Court." From 11 December 1916 until his retirement on 30 June 1937, Harry was Industrial Officer for the Metropolitan Water, Sewerage and Drainage Board.
