Maryanne Dever was a member of Academics for Justice (AFJ), a group formed in 1990 by academics concerned about the justice system in Australia. Of particular concern was the crown case against Tim Anderson which resulted in his conviction in November 1990 for the Hilton bombing; AFJ believed this had been a miscarriage of justice and called for a Royal Commission into the bombing. In early 1991 AFJ published a book 'Travesty! : miscarriages of justice', this was largely an analysis of the crown case. Anderson's appeal was upheld and he was released from prison in June 1991.
