  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Betty Roland was born Mary Isabel Maclean at Kaniva, Victoria in 1903. She later adopted her father's christian name. After leaving school she worked as a junior reporter for Table Talk and Sun News-Pictorial in Melbourne. Her first play, The Touch of Silk, was produced by Melbourne Repertory Theatre in 1928. She left an unhappy marriage in 1933 and travelled with prominent Australian Communist Guido Baracchi to Russia, where she worked as a journalist for fifteen months. After returning to Australia, she wrote political plays and sketches for several years, and commenced writing for radio in 1942. She worked as a freelance journalist in London between 1952 and 1961. Her works include several children's books, three novels - The Other Side of Sunset (1972), No Ordinary Man (1974), Beyond Capricorn (1976) - and The Eye of the Beholder (1984), a study of the artist's colony Montsalvat (where she lived during the 1970s). She has published three autobiographical volumes: Caviar for Breakfast (1979), which recounts her experiences in Russia, An Improbable Life (1989) and The Devious Being (1990).
